Secret tips and tricks on choosing the freshest durians!
Choosing a fresh, flavorful durian is an art but at the same time, SIMPLE! Especially if you’re aiming for one that's at peak ripeness. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect durian:

1. Look at the Shape
Round vs. Oval: Generally, round durians tend to have more flesh than oval ones. Round durians also often contain creamier and sweeter flesh.
2. Check the Stem
Firm and Moist: A fresh durian will have a firm, slightly moist stem. If the stem looks dry and shrunken, it’s likely that the durian has been off the tree for a while.
Cut Edge: A freshly cut stem usually looks pale and greenish-white. If it’s dark brown and dry, it may not be fresh.
3. Listen for a Hollow Sound
Shake Test: Gently shake the durian or tap the shell. A good durian will produce a slightly hollow sound as the seeds and flesh shift inside, indicating ripeness.
4. Smell the Aroma
Strong but Not Overpowering: Ripe durians have a distinct aroma that’s strong and slightly sweet. If the smell is too overpowering, it might be overripe. Conversely, if there's no aroma, it may still be underripe.

5. Examine the Spikes
Firm but Not Hard: Fresh durians typically have spikes that feel firm but have a bit of give. If the spikes are very soft, it could be overripe or bruised inside.
6. Look for Natural Cracks
Small, Natural Cracks: A small crack at the base is a good sign, as it means the durian has ripened enough to start opening naturally. Avoid any durians with large or wide cracks, as these can spoil faster.
7. Weight and Size

Heavy for Its Size: A heavier durian often means more flesh, which is ideal. However, if it feels too heavy, check that it’s not underripe.
8. Touch the Seam
Soft at the Seams: The seams (where the durian naturally splits) should feel soft to the touch if the durian is ripe. If the flesh underneath feels firm and hard, it might still need more time.
Using these tips can help you find a durian that’s creamy, sweet, and packed with flavor. Are you planning to try it for the first time? Do let us know how was your first durian experience!
