Why are some of our D197 MSW husk slight grey/ash in color?

Many of you has been asking us why most of our D197 MSW has grey husked and in this blog we will be explaining why! It definitely isn’t “Chao da"/burnt”, at least not in the inside! Do note that, grey husked D197 MSW are very high in demand and low in supply as they typically come from older trees. Fortunately, we have access to private farms and are able to consistently have access to them!
The slight grey or ash-colored husk on some of your D197 Mao Shan Wang (MSW) durians can be attributed to several natural factors during the growth and maturation process. Here's why this occurs:

An example of some grey husked durians we have.

1. Ripeness

The greyish or ashen tint on the husk often indicates a durian that has matured fully on the tree. As the fruit reaches its peak ripeness, changes in its external pigmentation can occur, sometimes resulting in a greyish appearance. However, please do make sure to check the meat of the durians before purchasing as nothing is 100%!

2. Sun Exposure

Durian trees exposed to strong sunlight often produce fruits with darker or slightly greyish husks. This is due to the increased oxidation of the outer layer when exposed to high UV levels. It’s particularly common in durian farms with less canopy cover and also older trees as they are taller.

3. Soil and Nutrients

The soil composition where the durians are grown plays a significant role in the color of the husk. Soil rich in certain minerals, can influence the pigmentation of the durian husk, giving it an ashen or greyish hue.

4. Tree Age

Older durian trees tend to produce fruits with darker, more textured husks. Additionally, the specific genetics of D197 Mao Shan Wang can naturally lead to slight variations in husk coloration, especially in premium varieties like Black Gold MSW, which are known for their darker husks and richer flavor.

5. Moisture and Weather Conditions

During growth, exposure to varying weather conditions, such as high humidity or rain, can also influence the husk’s coloration. A slightly grey or ashen hue might result from environmental factors affecting the husk’s surface.

Key Takeaway:
A slight grey or ash-colored husk is normal and often a hallmark of premium-quality durians. It can indicate proper ripeness and optimal growing conditions, ensuring the rich flavor and creamy texture Mao Shan Wang is famous for. This natural variation is no cause for concern and may even signify a better-tasting durian! Hence, most of our regular MSW kakis always ask for grey husked durians!
